Today was a HUGE let down. For a week the plan was for me to go to the Durham Animal Shelter to meet with the head of volunteers. I waited outside for 30 minutes and no one answered my calls or emails. After I left and headed out on the highway she called me and told me that she didn't see me. I feel upset because it seems like I am a hassel or something when really I just wanted to be there to help. Here are the two pictures I took today as I waited in the parking lot for no one to end up letting me in :(
It was also a frustrating day because I had to get up at 7am to be there by 8. Boo!
Wow...you are having a much different experience there. I hope you are able to get in soon.
ReplyDeletePeyton,
ReplyDeleteHow frustrating! I hope you'll try one more time and perhaps you can educate them a bit with very politely sharing your experience and reaffirming your desire to help. As we do know these shelters are almost always understaffed (and underpaid) and they may have been doing the best they could that day. Hopefully you'll find a way into this shelter and learn more about how they work and how you can help them. It all makes me so appreciative of the Wake County center which benefits from better funding than many of the smaller shelters.
Hang in there!
How close is this facility to your place? Do you think it would be better to switch facilities? Just brain storming here :)
ReplyDelete@sweet pea time: I am trying again! I will be there tomorrow. I am going to discuss with the coordinator a routine schedule and time.
ReplyDelete@Kiba: This facility is ten minutes away from where I live and on the way to work. Very good brain storming! I work and live in Durham so this is by far my best bet!
Hang in there Peyton. Sometimes the set-up/orientation is the rockiest part. Georgia is very right in that shelter employees are under-valued and under-paid. This is not an excuse to under-value your services and keep you waiting, but try your best to be generous and file this under a miscommunication. I would bet my last dollar that you are not at all in the way, and that your services are gravely needed, so much so, that they sound like they are having trouble making time to training you! Thank you for posting photos of what the shelter looks like. It makes it very interesting for us to compare. I will need to post a photo of WCAS for you and Jess to see too!
